Does my iPhone support eSIM?
FairWave · Published 2026-09-07
If your iPhone is an XS, XR, or anything newer, it supports eSIM. If it’s an iPhone 8, 8 Plus or X, it doesn’t — no travel eSIM will work on it, ours included.
That’s the short version. The longer version has one twist worth two minutes of your time.
Which iPhones work
Apple changed the game in the US in 2022: from the iPhone 14 onward, US models don’t have a SIM tray at all. They’re eSIM-only, which is actually good news for travel — your home line and a travel line sit side by side, and you pick which one carries data in Settings. Everything from the XS (2018) through the 13 family, plus both SE models (2020 and 2022), has a nano-SIM slot and eSIM together, and works the same way: one physical line, one digital.

The one thing that actually trips people up
It’s almost never the model. It’s the lock. A carrier-locked iPhone can be fully eSIM-capable and still refuse a travel profile. Thirty seconds to check: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions”, you’re clear. If it doesn’t, your carrier’s unlock page is your first stop — and it can take a few days, so do it this week, not at the gate.
FAQ
Does the iPhone X support eSIM?
No. iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus have no eSIM hardware. The XS, released the following year, was the first.
Can I keep my US number while using a travel eSIM?
Yes. Your home line stays active for calls and texts; the travel eSIM only carries data. Nothing about your number changes.
My iPhone is eSIM-capable but the profile won’t install — why?
Nine times out of ten it’s a carrier lock. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock.
