The UK, Italy, France and Spain are four of the five most-visited overseas destinations for Americans — 6.0M, 4.2M, 4.1M and 3.1M US trips in 2024, per the US National Travel and Tourism Office — and the New York area sends more travelers to them than anywhere else in the country. Most of those travelers are on a family or prepaid plan that doesn’t include Europe.
The ten-day math
On a $12/day pass (AT&T Day Pass or Verizon TravelPass): $120 per phone. On T-Mobile Experience Beyond or More: nothing extra until you pass 15 GB or 5 GB — genuinely fine for many trips, and we say so on the T-Mobile page. The setup, so nothing goes wrong at the gate
1. Check your phone and plan — 30 seconds with the checker; it will also tell you if your carrier plan already covers you.
2. Buy before you fly. Install on home Wi-Fi at least a day ahead — our T-3 email reminds you, because everyone forgets.
3. Keep your home line on for calls and texts; set the travel line as your data line.
4. Turn off data roaming on the home line (this is the $12-surprise preventer).
5. Land, turn on the travel line, done.
