What “Europe” means on this plan
“Europe” is a word that every provider defines to suit itself, so here is ours, in full.
This plan covers 41 destinations: 36 countries and 5 territories. The territories are Åland, Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar; we count them separately because they are not countries, and a list that quietly folds them in to reach a bigger number is the first sign of a plan worth reading twice.
The list includes three places that “Europe” plans routinely exclude or bill separately: the United Kingdom, Turkey and Ukraine. If your itinerary is London to Istanbul, this is one plan, not three.
Where this plan does not work
A coverage list is only useful if it also tells you where it stops.
This plan does not cover Andorra, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, the Faroe Islands, Kosovo, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Russia, San Marino, Svalbard or Vatican City.
Two of those catch people out. Andorra and Monaco are easy to walk into on a France or Spain trip without thinking about it, and neither is covered. San Marino and Vatican City sit inside Italy and are not covered either, though a short visit is usually spent on the data your phone already cached.
If your trip runs through the Western Balkans, this is not the right plan; ask us before you buy and we will point you at one that fits.
What speed you actually get, and what we can't tell you
Every plan here runs on 4G and 5G where the local network has it.
The per-day plans state their limit: after the daily allowance, they slow to 384 Kbps. The operator publishes that number and we print it.
For the fixed-data plans on this page, the operator publishes no throttle at all. That does not mean there isn’t one. It means they did not tell us, and we are not going to turn their silence into a promise. On every plan card you will see exactly what they stated, and “not specified by the provider” where they stated nothing. That is Fair Print, and this is the one page where it costs us a better-sounding headline.
What we can't promise either way is the network itself. Coverage is strong in cities and along main routes, and it thins out in mountains, at sea and in the emptier parts of the continent, the same way it does for a local SIM.
180 days to activate
Buy it now, use it whenever. Every plan on this page can sit unactivated for 180 days, and the clock on your data only starts when you install the eSIM and connect.
That means buying while you are booking flights costs you nothing in wasted days, which is the opposite of how most travel data is sold.
The data you don't use comes back
Most travel eSIMs keep whatever you don't spend. We don't.
When your plan ends, FairCredit returns 70% of the value of the data you didn't use, as credit towards your next trip, valid for 12 months. It is not points and it is not a discount code; it is the money you overpaid for a plan that was bigger than your trip turned out to be.
Will it work on my phone?
An eSIM needs a phone that supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Most phones sold in the US in the last five years qualify, and a few do not.
Setting it up
1. Buy the plan. You get an install link by email straight away.
2. Install the eSIM before you fly, while you are still on Wi-Fi. It sits dormant.
3. Land, turn on the FairWave line, keep your US number on your physical SIM for calls and texts.
Is this cheaper than your carrier?
Depends on the carrier and on how long you are going. We did the arithmetic for a ten-day trip, against what US carriers actually charge per day, and published the working.

Does it work in the UK?
Yes. The United Kingdom is included, along with Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar.
Does it work in Turkey?
Yes. Turkey and Ukraine are both included, which is not true of every plan sold as “Europe”.
Is there a speed limit or a data cap?
The per-day plans slow to 384 Kbps once the daily allowance is used, and the operator says so. For the fixed-data plans the operator publishes no throttle, which we show as “not specified by the provider” rather than as a promise of full speed. You get whatever the local network gives until your data runs out.
Can I keep my US phone number?
Yes. The eSIM is a second line. Your physical SIM keeps your number for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries the data. Turn off data roaming on your carrier line so it can't bill you.
When does my plan start?
When you install the eSIM and connect to a network, not when you buy it. You have 180 days from purchase to activate.
What if I go somewhere this plan doesn't cover?
Your phone will look for your home carrier and roam at your carrier's rates, which is what you were trying to avoid. Check the list above against your itinerary before you buy, and ask us if a stop isn't on it.
